Closure of the Medical Board of California's Physician Diversion Program

ALERT: Closure of the Medical Board of California’s Physician Diversion Program Guidance for addressing the responsibilities of hospital medical staffs and well-being committees as a result of the closure of the Diversion Program for Physicians. (June 2008)

Joint Interim Guidelines from the Workgroup on Physician Health
The closure of the Diversion Program left well-being committees without the central resource on which they had relied. They must now find alternative and appropriate resources for the functions required as part of professional assistance activities. A Workgroup on Physician Health Programs, a coalition of stakeholders that includes CSAM, the California Medical Association (CMA), California Psychiatric Association (CPA) and the California Hospital Association (CHA), is working toward establishment of a state-wide physician health program that will fill this need, but until it is in place physician health committees should be sure that the necessary functions are carried out effectively. The information in this document is designed to help make informed choices among possible providers of services. It does not give a list of service providers from which committee members can choose.
